Lew Daly is a Senior Fellow, Director of the Fellows Program, and Project Director on Sustainable Progress at Dēmos, a public policy organization based in New York City. A writer on religion, political development, and economic thought, his recent books include Unjust Deserts: How the Rich are Taking Our Common Inheritance (The New Press, 2008), co-authored with Gar Alperovitz. Most recently, he is the author of God's Economy: Faith-Based Initiatives and the Caring State (University of Chicago Press, 2009), which examines how the shifting political and legal landscape of faith-based social services has been shaped by Catholic ideas about public responsibility and the role of the state. Lew has also published articles, commentary, and reviews in many periodicals, including Newsweek, Boston Review, Commonweal, Dissent, Tikkun, Policy Review, the Journal of Markets & Morality, Religion and Culture Web Forum , and Church & Society. He is a frequent commentator in broadcast and internet media and has spoken widely on religion and American political development in both academic and advocacy settings. Prior to joining Dēmos, Lew was a fellow of the Schumann Center for Media & Democracy, where he worked on special projects with then-president Bill Moyers. He did pastoral work in a federal prison as well as community organizing on labor issues before turning to public writing. Lew holds a B.A. from Oberlin College, and advanced degrees from Brown University, the University at Buffalo, and Union Theological Seminary. He lives in upper Manhattan with his family.
