Genetic Sequencing Goes to School

A recent New Yorker article entitled “Get Rich U.” asks whether we should be concerned by the blurring line between academia and industry.  How does the growing infrastructure for capitalizing on the translation of basic science into commercial products inform the mission and measured success of the university?  Through a case study of the recent integration of direct-to-consumer (DTC) personal genetic testing services into coursework at Stanford, we will explore how students who sign up for personal genetic testing may be reframed as consumers, patients, and/or research participants and how these shifts impact on institutional responsibility and accountability.
