On Mother’s Day this year, I published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times revealing the forced sterilization of my mother and outlining the history of forced sterilization in the United States. The response to it convinced me to found a campaign, Outlaw Forced Sterilization, which aims to 1) repeal the legacy eugenics laws in Washington State & Mississippi 2) drive a Congressional resolution 3) secure apologies the remaining 23 states that have not done so 4) promote inquiries into extrajudicial “private” forced sterilizations 5) support understanding of American eugenics 6) and outlaw forced sterilization internationally.
