Kathleen Sloan is co-editor of the book “Race and the Genetic Revolution: Science, Myth and Culture” with Sheldon Krimsky and the Program Coordinator at the Council for Responsible Genetics (CRG), organizing national conferences and forums on issues of genetics and race, researching and initiating projects on women and biotechnology, and a contributing writer to its GeneWatch magazine and blog. Ms. Sloan is a communications, public relations and marketing professional and social justice advocate with over 20 years experience. She holds a Master’s degree in International Relations and has lived and worked in Russia, Hungary and Ireland. She is the National Organization for Women’s (NOW) Main Representative at the United Nations (UN) and is a member of its Board of Directors. She has directed non-profit organizations and was the Public Relations Director of a multi-national poultry genetics corporation with operations in 80 countries and over 800 employees. She conducts advocacy and writes on biotechnology, women’s, indigenous peoples,’ and human rights issues. She was awarded a Cochran Fellowship by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), promoting Russian-American cooperation. She currently is a U.S. State Department Consultant on women’s issues for its International Information Program at embassies and consulates around the world.
Since 1983, the Council for Responsible Genetics (CRG) has produced science-based research in the public interest and fostered public debate about the social, ethical and environmental implications of genetic technologies. CRG publishes "Gene-Watch," an award-winning magazine featuring articles and essays covering all aspects of biotechnology and authored by a broad array of activists, scholars and practitioners. CRG's mission is dedicated to examining the best science, interpreting the results, assessing the implications, communicating them to a general audience and facilitating meaningful, measurable change.
The National Organization for Women (NOW) is the oldest and largest women's rights organization in the United States. NOW's mission is to take action to bring about equality for all women and girls. It works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system and all other sectors of society; secure abortion, contraception and reproductive rights for all women; end all forms of violence against women; eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and promote equality and justice in society. NOW accomplishes its mission by educating the public and media about the status of and threats to women's rights; lobbying for and writing laws that promote full equality for women; recruiting and electing feminist candidates at all levels of government; initiating and supporting lawsuits against violators of women's rights; demanding fair and unbiased courts and judicial nominees; protesting businesses that mistreat women and people of color; registering new voters and inspiring them to get to the polls; organizing rallies, demonstrations and marches of all sizes; and working in coalition with progressive allies.
