On July 7, the German Parliament decided about a new regulation on PGD. Until now, the entire practice has been interpreted as prohibited within the Embryo Protection Law. However, in a case in which a physician self-reported having performed PGD, the Supreme Court held that no laws had been violated and thus the legal framework around the practice had to be reconsidered. The ensuing debate is an example of a political situation in which the  leftist/feminist/anti-eugenic position (against selection and in favor of abortion rights) has become marginalized. Susanne Schultz from the Gene-ethics Network Berlin gave an overview on the PGD debate and other current regulatory changes in Germany and showed some European/global dimensions of these debates and changes.
