The Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine adopte by the Council of Europe in 1997 defines a framework for the protection of human rights with regard to the applications of biolgy and medicine. It sets out fundamental principles applying to daily medical practice and as such is referred to as the European patient rights treaty. It also contains provisions applying to specific fields i.e. biomedical resarch, genetics and transplantation.
